S/o Thomas, a rich London merchant & Joan, eldest of 13 children, and academic from early age. 1571 aged 16 Greek scholarship at Pembroke, Cambridge and named as one of the first scholars at Jesus, Cambridge founded same year. Lifelong friend of John Chamberlain, whom he met at Cambridge. Famous preacher. Chaplain E Huntingdon 1580, Appointed Chaplain to QE1 and also to ArchBp. Whitgift (friend of 3E Cumberland) 1589, Rector St Giles Cripplegate, Prebend St Pauls. Master of Pembroke 1589, (Friend of Sir Francis Walsingham, hebaptised 2E Essex 1591) Dean of Westminster 1601, he took part in funeral of QE1 and Coronation of James I (who had great esteem for him and for his theology). Bp Chichester 1605 aged 50 (when he ceased to be a pluralist), Bp Ely and Privy Councillor 1609, Bp Winchester 1619. Headed committee for Authorised Version 1611. His hopes of Arch. Cant. ruined by appointment of George Abbot, whom, however, he gave his wholehearted support, particularly in the enquiry which followed Abbot's accidental killing of a gamekeeper while hunting. Andrewes said, in essence "Don't judge harshly; it could have happened to any of us" Friend of Hooker, Donne, George Herbert and Ferrars, he was a saintly man who led a quiet prayerful life. Matthew Wren wrote the epitaph on his tomb.
